Mayfield, Murray regaining large portions of water service

Water was flowing Friday morning to most of Murray and Mayfield and was spreading outward to customers in Calloway and Graves counties.

Mayfield Mayor Arthur Byrn said most if not all of Mayfield Electric & Water customers had water service Friday morning. No boil water order was in place, and while he said he was confident it was safe, those concerned should err on the side of caution.

Districts in outlying areas of the county were in various states of operation. Byrn, who was working from the county's emergency operations center, said the county was moving generators around to try to restore service as quickly as possible. The Mayfield utility was "in pretty good shape," Byrn said, and he expected it to begin pumping water to the Hickory Water District on Friday.

Hickory, South Graves and Hardeman water customers had no service Friday morning, but Byrn said the generators might bring them online within 24 hours.

Eric Young, treatment plant operator for the Sedalia Water District, said the district's tank normally held a three or four day supply of water.

"We're going on our fifth day with nothing being pumped into it," he said. "We'll probably run out today unless we come up with a generator."

Jim Wade, the operator superintendent at the Symsonia Water District, said generator power had water flowing, but the sewer system was not working, so he urged people to use as little water as possible.

Larry Elkins, Calloway County judge-executive, said the majority of Murray Water System customers were online Friday morning, with other areas being brought back on one at a time. He said he hoped to have nearly all the service restored Friday evening. A boil water remained in effect until further notice, he said, and won't be rescinded until next week at the earliest.
